For those not familiar, Arizmenda belong to the infamouos black metal collective known as the Black Twilight Circle hailing from southern California. Being responsible for two of my favorite favorite black metal albums in recent years, this album came with high expectations and it had a lot to live up to. and it does not disappoint. Like previous work, this album is a harrowing listen and is intense from start to finish. There is no relief. Every second of this album is punishing. The guitar work is incredible and the guitar tone is mental. What Arizmenda can achieve with just a single note is amazing, bending the string and manipulating the note making it ring in your ears for days. The bass lines are pounding and nauseating. The riffs are chaotic and maddening, but at the same time catchy and groovy. It's psychedelic in the most fucked up and best way possible. The vocals, as expected, are demented and perverted and send chills down your spine. The music has so many layers and subtle nuances and it's apparent a lot of attention to detail went into it, I've listened to it probably 10 or more times since I've had it and still hear new things every time I listen to it. It's almost unbelievable this was all handled by one person. Every instrument is played masterfully with personality and originality. The music has so much emotion, feeling, and sincerity in it. You can tell the music is genuinely inspired. It reeks of insanity and perversion. You don't need to read the lyrics to find out what this music is about. The artwork and sound of the music alone says it all. You simply can't fake music like this. If you seek comfort in your music, look elsewhere. There is no salvation to be found in this music. It will only drag you down further. All in all, this album is a bent, fucked up, off kilter, sickening experience and Arizmenda puts bands like Portal and Deathspell Omega to absolute shame.

I'd recommend this album for anyone who is fan of Blut Aus Nord's more dissonant and experimental albums, Bethlehem, Deathspell Omega, Portal, or anyone who just likes good music in general. If you don't like this album, you obviously hate music and should kill yourself.
Debut demo from one man US black metal project Niantiel. It was originally released in 2011, but got released this year to celebrate the bands first ever live performance. Three tracks of raw, eerie, haunting black metal. The synth and keys are especially eerie and elevate the recording to new heights and atmosphere. Interesting fact - The synth sound was taken from a broken down out of tune piano that was in the recording space it was recorded at. Highest possible recommendation.
Debut full length from obscure black/death metal band Set. The band is a one man project (with session vocalist) of Chad Davis ( Demoncy, Father Befouled, Anu, etc). This album was extremely overlooked in 2013. This is easily one of the best metal albums to come out last year. All I have to say about this album, is it rules. I don't even want to spoil any of it because it simply is that awesome. Buy it, stream it, download it, whatever. It's worth your time and your support.
Split cassette between Cosmic Church and the very prolific Circle of Ouroborus. Cosmic Church side contains three tracks, one intro and two 11 minute epics. Similar in sound and direction as their last full length. The Circle of Ouroborus side contains four tracks of lo-fi black metal/post punk goodness. The Circle of Ouroborus side is the better half of this split in my opinion. Although, if you loved the last Cosmic Church full length and it left you longing for more, this split with satiate your hunger.
Making it onto many end of year lists, and received a lot of praise. The album is very long, a double LP totaling 1 hour and 15 minutes in length. It's a dense album with A LOT of material. Fortunately there is enough variety and the music is good enough that sitting through the entire thing is not a chore. The music is sprawling, expansive and very atmospheric. Some really interesting guitar work and tones can be found as well. Subtle folk elements, some acoustic passages, and EPIC riffs. The only downfall of this album in my opinion is the vocals. The vocals are kind of weak and don't have much "oomph".

Released by Kuunpalvelus on LP and CD

LISTEN

Sheol is one man death metal band from the UK and this is their debut MLP. After receiving a copy of their promo tape (that I posted earlier) I was anxious to get my hands on this LP. Sheol plays old school death metal the Finnish way. Any fan of Finnish death metal such as Belial, Demigod, Archgoat, etc will enjoy this LP. Thick guttural vocals, a crunchy guitar tone, and a cacophonous grimy atmosphere. This MLP also features an impressive cover of Darkthrone's "Cromlech".

Released by Iron Bonehead Productions on LP. Limited to 500 copies.
Cult of Fire is a black metal band from Czech. This is their second album to date, and the title translates to "Ascetic Meditation of Death". The Czech Republic has a history of producing some really odd black metal bands. Such as Masters Hammer, Root, etc. Cult of Fire continues this tradition, crafting some of the most interesting and unique black metal I have ever heard. The band fuses traditional black metal song writing, with Middle Eastern melodies and instruments. Heavy use of keyboards, and what I believe to be sitar. The music has an occult, ritualistic atmosphere, but not one that you would typically expected from a black metal record. There is something special about Cult of Fire. The production is clear and is perfect for what the band is trying to achieve. Every instrument, every note, every key shines through. If I could choose one word to describe this album, it would be Majestic. The music is actually beautiful. The riffs are full of emotion, the keys compliment the music well and are not overbearing, and the vocals soar over the instrumentation like a narrator. Damn near PERFECT album. The artwork and packing of the LP is also stunning. 10/10, two thumbs up, do yourself a favor and buy this damn record.

Lluvia is a one man black metal project of Lord Vast (The Rain in Endless Fall, Blut Der Nacht, Wylve) from Portland, OR. This is his first release under this project. Despite being from the Northwest (aka Cascadia), where the Black Metal scene mostly comprises of a bunch of tree hugging hippies writing pretty sounding feel-good bullshit, Lluvia does not. This album is amazing. This album could have easily been released in the mid 90's in Finland. The albums is masterfully crafted. The tracks weave in and out of each other seamlessly with peaks, summits, and valleys of acoustic passages, triumphant tremolo picked riffs, field recordings, and soaring vocals. Highest possible recommendation. BUY OR DIE!
Wulkanaz is a one man black metal band from Sweden. Extremely raw, minimal, odd ball black metal. Wulkanaz absolutely captures the essence of "primitive black metal", and executes in a way that is entirely his own and original. Everything about this album sounds archaic and tribal. I could imagine these songs being played in a circle around an open fire by a primitive barbaric neanderthal tribe. Highly recommended if you are in search of something different and unique.

Without a doubt one of the best demos to surface in 2013,
Malthusian make a great first impression. Many different sounds and influences

chaotic riffing. It’s got a recipe for perfection. Highest possible
Viha is a one man black metal band from Finland. This is supposedly his third demo, although I have no information on the previous two demos. Towards The Black Infinity is a mesmerizing recording. Some really moody riffs, distant raspy vocals, short but effective interludes, all wrapped up in a nice “spacey” production. It was released by Kuunpalvelus so you know it’s nothing short of exceptional.

Wormlust is a one man black metal project from Iceland. Having had released a number of great demos, the time has finally come for him to unleash his debut full length among the hordes. This LP surpassed all expectations. It is absolutely phenomenal. Filled with drowning dissonance, dark psychedelia, and esoteric ethereal soundscapes. Highly contrasted, totally off-kilter, and bent. Highest possible recommendation. Recommended for fans of Arizmenda, Blut Aus Nord, Deathspell Omega, etc.

The second release by Finnish black metal band Keres this year does not disappoint. After their phenomenal demo (that I posted earlier), they release their debut mPL and first vinyl release "Old Blood For A New Moon". While not quite as impressive to me as their previous demo, this LP is still great. Four cold, mid-paced black metal tracks pressed onto wax.

Fantastic new release from the infamous Black Twilight Circle. Being now veterans in the black metal underground, they display an equally proficient ability to play Death Metal. Acualli has savage vocals drenched in reverb, a thick heavy guitar tone, aggressive drums, and a murky evil atmosphere. Even though Acualli sounds in many ways similar to a lot of other bands going in the same direction, they still have that signature Black Twilight Circle sound that sets them apart from the rest. The only other band I could really compare them to is Muknal, another Black Twilight project. Pact of Possession is, in my opinion, one of the best Black Twilight Circle releases to date and I would recommend trying to obtain a copy.

Released by Crepusculo Negro in an edition of 100 hand numbered copies. Those familiar with Crepusculo Negro are probably aware of their reputation for having really terrible sounding dubbed tapes. Those in fear will be relieved to hear that they actually did a good job dubbing these. My copy sounds crystal clear.

Long awaited Grave Miasma full length after two great EP’s has finally arrived. While Grave Miasma doesn’t deviate from their previous formula, this is a fantastic album and in my opinion their best material to date. Fans of the pervious EP’s will surely enjoy this album. Not really much to say about this album other than it sounds like Grave Miasma, and that is a good thing.
The latest Black Twilight Circle compilation “Tliltic
Tlapoyauak” released to commemorate their 2013 tour. This compilation feature
new tracks from every Black Twilight project, including some new ones. Some of the new projects include Blood Play, a bent, anxiety ridden, twisted black metal project. Kampilan, a slower funeral
doom esque project. And Acualli, a death metal project reminiscent of Muknal.
Every track from every artist on this compilation is worth listening to and
there is something for everyone on this release. The highlights for me are: Arizmenda - Rites of Deconsecration, Blood Play – Screams Transcend,
Muknal – Bringers of Filth, Dolorvotre – Upward Spiraling, and Acualli – Rites
of Mockery.

Released on 2 home dubbed tapes housed in an over sized clam shell case with a 20 page booklet. Good luck finding a copy of this. Supposedly this is going to get the vinyl treatment by AJNA. Lets hope that happens because this release deserves it.

If you don’t know who Grave Upheaval are, they’re a Death Metal band from Australia, sharing members with the legends Portal and Impetuous Ritual. Like the aforementioned bands, Grave Upheaval's music is obscure and extremely dark. This album contains 6 new songs (7 if you got the diehard version), and a rerecording of the song “Grave Upheaval” off their self-titled demo. Grave Upheaval seem to have abandoned all elements of what we commonly associate with death metal on this release. Grave Upheaval are not interested in being “brutal”, or rocking out. There are no catchy riffs, there are no flashy guitar solos, or break downs. This album is pure atmosphere. There is so much texture on this album. The guitars drone on, the drums are organic and resonant, and the vocals sound like a corpse bellowing out his last exhausted gasps from an ancient tomb creating a very unsettling vibe. This is the kind of album that literally fills whatever space you are playing it in with sound. You can feel it pulse beneath your feet like a living, breathing monster. With every release Grave Upheaval gets more and more obscure. The name of this album and the songs are all untitled. The artwork is minimal, and one has to really squint at the images to even make out what they are. The whole presentation of the album really compliments the music.
Swarþ is a black/death metal band from an unknown region. After two demos they release their debut EP “Mors Red Salvator Hominum”. It contains 4 untitled tracks and spans ~25 minutes in length. This is some of the most unique sounding black metal I’ve heard in a long time. Ritualistic occult atmosphere, without sounding pretentious. Some pretty varied vocals, ranging from shrieks to throaty low growls to chilling howls. Very recommended.
